Cambrian Line
The Cambrian Lines ERTMS Project encompasses the renewal of the signalling infrastructure presently controlled by Machynlleth signal box, replacing RETB (Radio Electronic Token Block) and TCB (Track Circuit Block) signalling with ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 technology operated without lineside signals according to a new set of rules and procedures. When complete, the Lines will operate with the new system from Sutton Bridge Junction (exclusive) to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli. It is the first application of ERTMS for main line signalling in the UK and is seen by customer as an enabler to significant change in ‘how the railway operates’.

ERTMS movement authorities will be transmitted to the train via Network Rail's GSM-R radio and fixed telecommunications networks. Train detection will be provided by axle counters, with evaluators centrally located in a new signalling control centre at Machynlleth.

The Cambrian Lines ERTMS Project includes the installation of ERTMS/ETCS equipment on seventeen Class 158 two-car units operated by Arriva Trains Wales. It also includes the installation of ERTMS/ETCS equipment on a number of Network Rail owned, and SERCO operated, Class 37 (RA5) locomotives that will provide piloting services for unfitted trains and motive power for freight/engineering applications on the route.  These locomotives are to be re-designated Class 97.

The ASTS solution provides for use of our RCC Route Control signaller interface system, SEI interlocking with distributed object control, Radio Block Centre to support provision of vital control information to trains, and complementary on-train equipment. The project is intended to provide a system that the customer can use to better understand the practical impacts of ERTMS technology on the railway operational arrangements and rules. These impacts include production of the rules/processes needed to operate a cab signalled railway including in event of system failure, the development of documentation and training to support the change from miles based measurements to kilometres, and the various arrangements needed to manage the transition from one way of working to another. Our scope includes provision of a Class 158 driver-training simulator and equivalent facilities for signaller training.
