The Lima metro, or Urban Train, will cover a total distance of 38 km and
link the city with the port of Callao.
The signalling system operates by audiofrequency track circuits.
This system enables a greater amount of information to be transmitted across
the carrier and guarantees a high level of security.
The automated system has a central post, from which the following operations
can be carried out: identification of trains on the line, remote control of
routes, display of the traffic situation on video or mimic panel, recording and
printing of events and video communication between the operator and the
system.
The train is equipped with a platform recognition device in order to prevent
the doors opening on the wrong side.
It has ground-to-train radio communication.
In September 1995, the first section of the track (known as “Primer tramo de la
Primera Fase”) was completed and delivered. Covering a distance of 10 km from
Villa El Salvador to Puente Atocongo, the metro has five stations and a
depot/repair shop, with a central post located inside the depot.
The metro is operated by Municipalidad Metropolitana de Lima.
