East European High Speed Line (LGV Est)

LGV Est
Ansaldo STS has been awarded the complete development of the signaling part of the East European High Speed Line project.

The East European High Speed Line, also know as LGV Est, will allow not only the circulation of French TGV train sets but also other European High Speed trains like the German ICE. This is possible thanks to due to its interoperability with the European rail network (ERTMS).

LGV Est in brief:

Length of track equipped:      300 km
Maximum speed:                   320 km/h
Commercial headway:           3 min

Speed control systems:

  • Wayside system ERTMS level 2 and TVM
  • On-board system Bi-standard equipment ERTMS/TVM
  • Interlocking (SEI) and integrated track circuit (UM)

The East European High Speed Line is in commercial service since June 2007.

The signaling project assigned to Ansaldo STS includes:

Supply of track circuits type UM 71, signaling development and interlocking equipment SEI connected to the Radio Block Center (RBC) for the functionality of ERTMS level 2.

ERTMS level 2 equipment:

  • Supply, parameterization and installation of balises, LEU and associated tools
  • Development and installation of the Radio Block Centers and associated tools

Wayside equipment:

Wayside signaling through combined equipment made of interlocking systems (SEI) + TVM and ERTMS level 2 system.

Interlocking equipment already succesfully used on the Mediterranean High Speed Line and many other conventional lines.

The first significant step of the project was the delivery of a trial platform in Valenciennes in March 2005. The platform was equipped with necessary tools, simulators, RBC (2) and EVC (European Vital Computer).

On Board equipment:

In addition to the national traditional High Speed trains already equipped with on board signaling equipment supplied by Ansaldo STS (TVM 430), SNCF has decided to buy 15 additional train sets dedicated to this new East European High Speed Line.

The train sets called “rames POS” (Paris - Ost Franckreich - Sud Deutchland) operate in France, Germany, Luxembourg and Switzerland. They are equipped with on-board security and signaling “Bi-standard ERTMS / TVM” able to read either signals sent from wayside TVM 430 or ERTMS signals sent by beacons or RBC via GSM-R.

These “rames POS” are also equipped with national systems such as KVB (France), LZB and PZB (Germany) and ZUB/Integra (Switzerland). The seamless, dynamic transitions from one system to another signaling system are managed by the “Bi Standard ERTMS / TVM” using Eurobalises®.
