Kuala Lumpur Monorail

.
The  Kuala Lumpur  Monorail  is a fully elevated, rapid transit system which links  commuters directly to the central business district of KL.
Operating since 31 August, 2003, the 8.6km, 11-station monorail serves has become an invaluable part of the city’s transport infrastructure with around 45,000 passengers travelling to its central commercial, employment, hotel and shopping districts each day.

To alleviate growing pressure on KL’s established transport networks and reduce traffic congestion which was becoming unmanageable the Malaysian government sought to identify a commercially viable transport alternative.

At the time, KL already had an established transport system in place. This comprised two rail systems, the Star and the Putra Light Rail, a network of bus routes, an extensive taxi industry, and a large number of private vehicles. While its rail and bus networks were effective, they did not interlink nor service KL’s city centre.

In addition to being commercially viable, KL’s transport solution had to comply with the government’s requirements of minimal disruption to the day-to-day operation of business activities in the city.

Malaysian Monorail Technology was appointed to design and construct Kuala Lumpur’s commercial monorail system that would run along KL’s busiest roads, through the city centre, and connect Titiwangsa (near the edge of Lake Titiwangsa Park) to the KL Sentral railway station, KL’s intermodal transportation hub.

Ansaldo STS was contracted to deliver the signalling and communications systems for the project.

The project was particularly challenging as it required a signalling system with the ability to detect the rubber tyres of the monorail vehicles as they traversed a concrete beam eight metres above the ground.

The signalling system installed is able to be upgraded and adapted for future monorail or mass transit system networks at any location and comprises:
  • Train Control System
  • Processor Based Interlocking
  • Wayside Processor Based Interlockings and Field Equipment
  • Train Detection System
  • Automatic Train Protection
  • Beam Switch Controllers
  • Fibre Optic Communications Network.
