For over a century, the world-wide family of Ansaldo STS companies has delivered industry-first solutions for rail transportation. Today, our sophisticated transit control systems build upon traditional signalling technology for a new generation of advanced systems in-step with evolving mass transit needs.
Communication Based Train Control (CBTC)
From a single-line metro installation to a metropolis network, CBTC’s fully integrated systems provide continuous high speed, two-way radio-based communication between wayside and vehicle. Carborne controllers determine vehicle position and enforce movement within authority limits. Communication between adjacent zone, interlocking and carborne controllers supports safe headway maintainance and maximixes line capacity.
Features & Benefits:
- Provides complete central office, vehicle and wayside systems - can be standalone or integrated with existing systems
- Supports operational headways as short as 60 seconds
- Reduces or eliminates the need for track circuits
Driverless Automatic Train Control (ATC)
Driverless ATC by Ansaldo STS adds further capability to our proven ATC, ATO and ATP technology. Since delivering the first fully driverless train control system certified to strict European Cenelec safety standards, the Copenhagen Metro in 2002, ATC driverless technology has become the number one choice for safe, efficient mass transit by metros in Rome, Milan, Thessalonica and Brescia.
Features & Benefits:
- Fully driverless operation reduces operating costs
- Improved system performance reduces headway
- On-board system detects failures and provides automatic failure recovery
- Integrates with a wide variety of signalling systems including fixed block, virtual block and CBTC systems
Track Circuit-Based Automatic Train Control (ATC) profile-based transit along with ATP, ATS and ATO subsystems enable driverless and semi-driverless operation for heavy and light rail transit. Proven, reliable technology in revenue service throughout the world provides built-in train detection.
Light Rail / Light Rapid Transit (LRT)
Our technology base enables us to propose a wide range of technical solutions to the needs of cost-conscious LRT customers. Requirements range from ‘drive-on-sight’ street-running low-floor systems with GPS based train positioning for information purposes, and traffic light priority schemes, through to fully signalled operations on dedicated rights of way providing ‘tram-train’ facilities at high platforms and with extended train protection requirements.
Our step-speed track circuit-based light rail solutions are customized to fit operating requirements. Complete central office, vehicle and wayside systems can be standalone or integrate with existing systems. Decades of experience in diverse wayside environments assures project success.
Features and Benefits:
- System design for rail transit provides maximum efficiency
- Station and vehicle performance adjust to operating conditions
- Compatible with all forms of traction power
Ansaldo STS can carry out the activities of design, construction, test, commissioning, system engineering, system integration, project management, operation, maintenance and project financing of complete Mass Transit rail systems including driverless and unattended metro systems, suburban railways, tramways and light rail systems, or any of its subsystems. The best showcase of Ansaldo STS' lead contractor excellence can be seen in Copenhagen, where the company was responsible for the complete system integration of what has been voted in 2008 as the Best World Metro.
System Integration activities include the supply of Traction Power, Power Supply, SCADA, Permanent Way, Telecommunications, Security, Automatic Fare Collection, Depot, Control and Maintenance Centres, Signalling, Rolling Stock, etc.
The technological excellence and expertise of Ansaldo STS combined with the long international tradition in the electromechanical and electronic fields permit to supply custom made systems or subsystems on time and on budget following the guidelines set by the clients.
CBTC based ATC for Metro
In purchasing a CBTC solution, go with the experience of a proven leader. Ansaldo STS is applying its vast knowledge and experience in the industry to the development of advanced rail transit control systems that build upon traditional signalling with a new generation of innovative technology. Our Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) solution offers enormous potential for the transit industry, both in ensuring safety and maximizing rail capacity.
In creating our CBTC solution, we developed and assembled an advanced set of best-in-class sub-systems that are unrivalled in their robust service pedigree and reliability while adhering to the IEEE 1474.1™ Standard for CBTC performance and Functional Requirements. When configured, they create a fully integrated and flexible platform that can deliver your business objectives across the board. Configuration to conform to emergent inter-operable standards in Europe is equally available and we are actively supporting industry standards initiatives to ensure best value and longest supportable service life for systems that we deliver.
There was no margin for second-best. When the city of Copenhagen, Denmark, set about building an innovative metro transit system in the new millennium, the planners in charge insisted on the highest industry standards, especially in terms of safety and reliability. So in selecting a vendor to develop and implement an advanced solution for their system's critical Automatic Train Control (ATC) technology, they chose the industry leader with over 150 years of experience, Ansaldo STS.
The Copenhagen Metro is the first fully automatic driverless transit system developed and implemented to meet stringent European CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) standards. Through this accomplishment, Ansaldo STS has provided a new and safer direction for the future of metro transit systems. In fact it has set the standard for others to follow.
Success breeds success. The success of the Copenhagen Driverless Metro is seen in the list of municipalities that are now building similar systems, including Rome, Milan, Thessaloniki and Brescia
Track Circuit-Based Automatic Train Control (ATC) profile-based transit, along with ATP, ATS and ATO subsystems and built-in train detection, enables driverless and semi-driverless operation for heavy and light rail transit. Proven, reliable technology in revenue service throughout the world provides a durable and efficient solution where systems based on radio communication of safety data are not favoured.
- Automatic Train Protection (ATP) ensures safe separation of trains
- Automatic Train Operation (ATO) vehicle and wayside components provide automatic stop and speed regulation.
- Supported by the underpinning safety assured by ATP, ATO delivers closer headway – more capacity
- Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) office system provides traffic coordination and route control
Light Rail & Tramways
Ansaldo STS is one of the world’s leading suppliers of transit wayside signalling and information systems, delivering the full range of equipment and functions needed to support patronage growth.
We have worked in all types of wayside environments including:
- Every type of track and civil structure including mainline, interlocking, siding, passenger station, tunnel, elevated, bridge, in-street and storage yard/depot tracks including areas with marginal track ballast
- Every type of signalling arrangement including in cab with ATP/ATO, wayside fully signalled with ATP, wayside traffic lights only with train stop arrangements, and drive-on-sight, with applicable signalling territory transition zones
- Every type of power supply and propulsion system including exposure in high EMI areas
- Every type of climate (e.g. hot/dusty/humid/ice-prone and with high daily temperature variance).
For the wayside, we excel in electronic control system and module applications, ground material installations, house/case build-up and wiring, and all required external interfaces to these apparatus. Where required we can supply traditional signalling elements such as:
