The group's main systems are the following:

The Interlocking system which manages the mobilization and location of trains in the stations and traffic junctions;

The ATC (Automatic Train Control) system which ensures the safe traffic of trains along the lines. The high level of system automation allows engine-drivers to correct or avoid mistakes, and imposes a speed limit for trains on the basis of traffic conditions with the possibility of stops before arriving at destination. This system is enhanced when applied to high-speed lines so it is primarily at the service of those trains which travel at speeds between 300 and 350km/h

The CTC (Centralized Traffic Control) system which allows for monitoring and tele-control of trains and subway traffic. The latter can manage a single line or the whole transport network as well as the optimization of traffic.

With regard to the enlargement of the signalling product portfolio, Ansaldo STS has created, developed and is further developing a series of innovation products over recent years. Among these is the new OTP (Optimized Traffic Planner) system for railway traffic management and mobilization which permits the detection of vehicles along the railway line in real time. The system is valuable for optimizing the traffic by identifying the shortest and most efficient tracts for those trains which are expected to circulate at specific times of the year. It was developed by Union Switch & Signal. for the market of the main railways in the United States, which are currently saturated from the point of view of the transport capacity.

ATC: Automatic Train Control, a system for the integration of various sub-systems with the ability to manage safety conditions of the trains in circulation

ATP: Automatic Train Protection, a system for controlling the speed and distance between trains as well as for managing the mobilization of trains, once they have arrived at the station

ATO: Automatic Train Operation, a constant control of train mobilization along the lines

ATS: Automatic Traffic Supervision, the monitoring of network mobilization

SCADA: Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, a monitoring system for various sub-systems

OTP: Optimized Traffic Planner, an innovation system for managing railway traffic and mobilization which allows traffic to be re-channelled in real time in order to increase circulation speed

CBTC: Communication Based Traffic Control, a system which is being developed and uses wireless connections for monitoring traffic

ERTMS: European Railway Traffic Management System, a system based on the European standard for monitoring railway traffic and aimed at achieving interoperability between countries

Pphpd: passengers per hour or destination

SA=1-MD/PD: Service Availability = 1 - Missing Departure/Planned Departure

IGBT inverter, sub-case: the sub-case is a device located underneath the train chassis

PS e IS: IS Signalling Equipment and Monitoring Equipment

PID: Passenger Information Display

PA: Public Announcement

ECP: Emergency Call Point

TETRA: Terrestrial Tracked Radio, the system is designed on the basis of the leaky feeder wireless technology in the subway network and for outside aerials

CCTV: Closed Circuit Television, close-circuit television control

CMC: Maintenance Control Centre, monitoring and maintenance centre

CRS: Control Room Supervisor

Fase OeM: Operation and Maintenance

PSIS: Passenger Safety and Information System

Unmanned: no steward on board

Progetto Modurban: Modular Urban Guided Rail System, foresees the installation of this technology in all the main European underground lines in order to create a shared systems structure
