Ansaldo STS (STS.MI) has been awarded a contract to automate much of Rio Tinto’s 1,300 km iron ore railway in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The Automatic Train Operation project is worth EUR 103 million to Ansaldo STS, and is the first time driverless technology has been used in such a large-scale heavy haul railway operation.
